About the Job Opportunity
The Department of Infrastructure has a vacancy for a suitably qualified Occupational Health and Safety Officer to ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (Act 85 of 1993) and its regulations. The successful candidate will operate within the Office of the Chief Mechanical Engineer.
This position focuses on maintaining health and safety standards within mechanical workshop environments that handle light to heavy construction vehicles, machinery, and road maintenance equipment. The role also includes oversight of work activities related to road sign manufacturing and routine road maintenance operations.
The successful candidate will play an important role in preventing workplace injuries, promoting safety awareness, and ensuring that proper health and safety plans are implemented and maintained. This is a permanent government post offering long-term career stability.

Key Responsibilities and Duties
- Ensure full compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act within the component.
- Monitor and reduce the risk and severity of workplace injuries.
- Develop and implement health and safety plans and procedures.
- Create awareness of health and safety requirements among staff.
- Conduct inspections within mechanical workshops and operational areas.
- Ensure safe operation of road maintenance and construction machinery.
- Provide administrative support related to occupational health and safety matters.
- Interpret and apply relevant health and safety legislation.
- Support contract administration processes relating to safety compliance.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation for compliance and reporting purposes.
Minimum Requirements
- Appropriate 3-year National Diploma or B-Degree (or higher) in Safety Management or related field.
- Minimum of 1 year relevant experience in occupational health and safety.
- Compulsory registration with SACPCMP as an Occupational Health and Safety Officer.
- Valid Code B driver’s licence.

Skills and Personal Attributes
- Working knowledge of mechanical workshop environments.
- Understanding of light and heavy construction vehicles and machinery.
- Knowledge of road maintenance and road sign manufacturing processes.
